Have you ever heard of Festival of Sleep Day? Word Nerd Day? Or how about Squirrel Appreciation Day? They are all fun and wacky unofficial holidays that occur in the month of January, which are perfect prompts for speaking and writing activities.
As students (reluctantly) return from winter break, this is often a time we need to liven up our classroom with some activities that inspire students’ creativity and thinking! Nearly every day in January offers at least one new quirky holiday that is perfect for conversation and creative writing practice. You’ll find these offbeat topics to be a great way to generate interest with your students and spice up speaking and writing activities. The topics are engaging for middle school or even Adult ESL students.
